New Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh: Yogi Adityanath

With great power comes great responsibility, the Modi - Shah combine when handed the responsibility to lead and take forward a #newindia completely score an own goal with appointing a hate spewing Yogi Adityanath as Chief Minister of UP. Guess the true colours of this new BJP leadership have started to show by this decision. India is in a bad spot with the lack of a credible, serious and socially liberal opposition, we desperately need a new progressive vision for the country and for new leaders to step up! Yogi Adityanath is the BJP MP from the eastern UP city of Gorakhpur, he also serves as the Mahanth (head priest) of a notable temple in the town. However his actions and views have time and again been at odds with one the preamble of the constitution outlines.

Because with moves such as these we dilute the very soul of our country, one which is freedom loving, religiously tolerant, inclusive and essentially humane. The Yogi is representative of BJP politics of yore, wherein theyrallied together people on a truly bigoted agenda which ended with the demolition of a mosque. The BJP government which got elected in 2014, was elected with a massive mandate, however this mandate was one for development, to take the India growth story forward on the back of solid governance. This mandate was not to further a communal agenda that Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee diluted to a large extent to make the party nationally acceptable. In the lead up to the next general election in 2019, the development agenda being the sole objective of the BJP seriously needs to be reviewed.

One of the major reasons for the BJP being able to get away with such murder, is the serious weakness that has enveloped the Congress party. The Indian National Congress, once the party of Nehru, Patel, Gandhi, Azad, Prasad, Ambedkar and other luminaries has overtime been reduced to a poorly run family firm. There is a dire need for India to revive the spirit of Independence, the spirit of a progressive India - where serious efforts were made to reduce societal and religious divides, to uphold an idea of India as once where all of India needed to move forward together.

The Prime Minister in a recent speech spoke of his vision for a New India, I’m sorry Mr. Modi if this is the type of India you seek to build then a very large part of that demographic dividend you often harp on about is not going to be with your government. There are a numerous good and well meaning people who have staked their reputations on the success of the Modi government, they will no doubt feel enormously let down today. Indian people are inherently peaceful, inclusive and freedom loving and any encroachment on these constitutionally enshrined ideals will be met with resistance at the ballot box in 2019.
